Pattern Discovery for the Design of Face-to-Face Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Activities

چکیده
This paper presents a methodology of discovering social action patterns in collaborative learning activities for use in improving activity design, and in particular for restructuring existing designs involving face-to-face social actions to enhance their social dynamics and thus better ensure the achievement of a specified aim. An activity in this context is defined as a sequence of actions that an actor may perform to accomplish a task objective. The proposed methodology validates a design experimentally by comparing the actions it specifies with those that are observed in an actual activity. Analyzing the data collected through such observation is central to determining which actions would improve the social dynamics of the original design. The criteria for adopting a discovered pattern will depend on the activity’s aims and the kind of actions observed. The proposed methodology is illustrated using data gathered during physics classes in two schools. The findings suggest that when formulating technologically mediated activities inside a classroom, designers should seek to incorporate face-to-face actions that support the dynamics of the activity and assist in achieving the social objectives of the tasks performed. The inclusion of such actions in design upgrades can also help prevent the occurrence of actions that interfere with the activity.

This study investigated the effectiveness of explicit pragmatic instruction on the acquisition of requests by college-level English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Taiwan. The goal was to determine first whether the use of explicit pragmatic instruction had a positive effect on EFL learners’ pragmatic competence. Second, the relative effectiveness of presenting pragmatics through two deli...

While Web discovery is usually undertaken as a solitary activity, Web co-discovery may transform Web learning activities from the isolated individual search process into interactive and collaborative knowledge exploration. Recent studies have proposed Web co-search environments on a single computer, supported by multiple one-to-one technologies. However, how this hybrid model using one-to-one d...

The emergence of low-price computers has made possible numerous new ways of classroom learning. The personal devices that are applied in a manner without interoperation with appropriate peripherals may interfere with face-to-face collaboration since the personal devices were design for personal usages. To improve the collaboration that takes place in small face-to-face groups in repeated episod...
متن کاملSteps toward computer-supported collaborative learning for large classes
This paper describes first steps taken at an Italian business university to use computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) to enhance the quality of teaching and learning for students in large classes. We describe the educational environment, goals, design of CSCL activities, and impact of the new course design on teachers, students, and administrators. We confirm that CSCL can be used to...
متن کاملGetting in on the (inter)action: exploring affordances for collaborative learning in a context of informed participation
Although considerable attention in the CSCL community has been on electronic-, Web-, or distance-learning applications, there is evidence suggesting that much of learning, particularly in open-ended problem-solving activities based large on tacit information, does not occur in isolation but in face-to-face settings. This has led my research to explore ways to develop technologies and media that...
